SID FEES

Postby Friend on Sat Dec 06, 2008 6:38 pm

It seems to me time to talk about all that SID fees get a resident of CV. :D

I'll start:

1) A zillion roads with water and power even in the remotest areas.

2) Two Recreation Centers with lovely pools and mini golf.

You next,

I can't complain. I feel it's a good bang for my buck. I would suggest re-doing the boat ramp on Chanute. Too narrow and the curve is hard for some.

EMA,

I often wondered about that boat ramp. Do you know if folks can and do fish around it?

Another SID fee benefit is golf. That's a huge one.

Anybody ever thought of sprucing up the park area by Tbird marina? That's where most people drive by when they first come in and I always thought it could be cleared out more to have a better view of the lake from the road. Maybe put in some playground equipment like Papoose, more pavilions, nicer and more park benches along the lakeside. It could be a nice focal point when you first come into the village. I would like to see the same thing on the south end of Sequoyah with all the fill they added. Think of how nice it would be if it was made into a nice park setting with nice grass, pavilions, and maybe a small fishing dock or just a nice place to sit and look at the lake. They could do the same thing to a smaller degree to the left of the boat ramp at Chanute.

I agree. There is an odd way that many of the water views are either obscured or made confusing as to whether they are public access or not. The marina is a real case of that. Is this a private business or a place folks can walk and fish and so on? It's not as clear as it could be.

In terms of "clean up" there are really three ways into the Village on the Sharp County side and two need help. One is by the all-but-abandoned Beach Club. That has become an eyesore. The other is Section Line Road turning onto Hiawatha Drive. There's been some real clean up in that area but still more can be done.

The important thing to say is that the trend has been very positive lately. It will take constant vigilance, but we've got the right people on the job. Inch by inch it is coming together.

Jep and Friend,

I like both your recent posts. Jep, my thoughts exactly on better, more inviting parks. Cleaning up the parks and adding things you are proposing is a great idea, I've thought the same thing, and takes very little money to do it. Friend, the marina at Thunderbird is a private business, and the land to the left looks like city land to me, but I could be wrong. Maybe call SID and ask.

Friend, cleaning up the east entrance is going to be hard to do, and I agree with you on that one, too. The real city limits line looks fine, where the red CV sign is, but what you're talking about is the old Beach Club property closer to the highway, and that's in Hardy, not CV. Problem is, if you want to come into CV from that way, you have to pass by that eyesore. I would bet the powers that be are as perturbed as you and I are, but all they can do is convince the Hardy City Hall people to see if they can do something about it. I am with you on that one. I'm not sure what can be done. The good thing about all of that is the Wayne Watkins group of country thugs seem to be going by the wayside, so hopefully somebody will buy that land and do something good with it.

The south entrance looks fantastic.

I agree with all these ideas. The redefining of the Thunderbird Marina area is a great place to start. I am not sure at all who owns the land on either side of the road from the Lakeview towards the town center, but it would be great to have a walkway on the Thunderbird side, with benches. A beach area there, if at all possible, would attract people of all ages. Maybe even a playground on the same side of road as Papoose Park, with a path or trail up the hill to connect the two playground areas.
Friend, you are right about Section Line Road/ Pontiac Drive up to Hiawatha Drive. Some great work has been done there, but it still has areas that could be cleaned up more. I would like to see better lighting and signage on the four-lane on that corner.
The north entrance of the village has to be addressed by Hardy and Cherokee Village. Hardy has to realise that the Beach Club property brought a lot of tourism to Hardy and CV by having that resort area up and running. Some resolution to this problem has to come soon. This is a bad economy, but it would seem like Hardy, and the AR. Attorney General would want this Wayne Watkins issue cleared up fast. This would give a legitimate investor the opportunity to restore the resort.
The Sequoyah park idea is a good one also. It would be nice if one park, on each lake that has parks, would have a dock that would allow easy access to picnic areas for boaters and for folks fishing from shore.
There are also some preliminary plans and drawings for a new CV park on the four-lane that would encourage tourists to drive into the Village. Many people are driving by us, going to Norfork Lake to vacation, that do not know that we have a more to offer than what they see while driving past us.
Kindest Regards, Chuck K

Hi Chuck,

I really like your ideas on the parks and dock as well as your other points. If I could sum up my thoughts on this it would be something like this -- more access. There are several places where you can get on the lakes, but docks and more places to fish and swim would be nice. Right now, there is only one public beach. The pools are great, but I would love to be able to do more lake swimming -- especially in the larger and deeper lakes. In terms of the smaller lakes, I would like a dock and more easy-access fishing zones.

I agree that the Thunderbird Marina area is not clear as to what's private and public. That would sure be a great location for a playground like you said.

All it takes is money. Let's face it. We don't pay alot in SID every year. Where else can you go and pay less than 200 bucks a year for what we have. I like all the ideas, but it will go slow unless they jack up the SID money we pay, and I don't want that. Thunderbird, I always have been told that the marina is owned by Midlake, but they lease the property they use for the marina from the city or SID something like that. I would think the other land is city land, but I could be wrong. The best idea is clearing out and making the land next to the marina most inviting and easy for people to enjoy the lake. The land if your looking at the water from the road, the land to the left of the marina is what I'm talking about. Clean up the bottom at the water's edge, make it a real nice park. When tourists drive by they'll have a real good inviting impression. I'm not saying it's bad now, it could be alot better is all. But it takes money.

Take a look at the Google Maps Street View and look at the property to the left of the marina from the road. There is possibilities with that piece of land. It could be a very nice, usable park with some changes. What do you think?

I agree that the area next to the Marina has enormous potential for development. The fact that it is right across from the Lakeview would really help to encourage its use. I would also like to see one more public beach -- not necessarily there -- but on one of the larger lakes.

Wanting to know if the park at the south end of Lake Sequoyah is going to get grassed over to be fit for use? It's where they put all the fill after cleaning out the channel and the lake a time back. Wouldn't it be great if we could press SID to grade that fill and put down some dirt and grass seed. There is plenty of room for a few parking spaces, a few picnic tables, and a nice dock for residents to use. That is a nice piece of land just sitting there doing nothing. Anyone else agree with me? In fact, every little park on the lakes should be upgraded a little for real use. What do you think?
